ABOUT SALLY

I'm so glad you're here!

People often ask how I found my way to spiritual direction. Looking back, I can see that God had been preparing me for this work long before I recognized it myself.

For thirty-five years, I worked in Christian publishing, serving as an editor, writer, and eventually Senior Editor of Abingdon Women, a successful line of in-depth Bible studies. My favorite part of the work was never simply editing words—it was sitting with authors, listening deeply, asking thoughtful questions, and helping them discover the story God was inviting them to tell. Without realizing it, I was practicing soul companionship before I knew there was a name for it.

Meanwhile, God was gently doing His own "editing" work in me—developing, shaping, and guiding me toward greater healing and wholeness in Christ.

Over time, my longing for less striving and more freedom led me into contemplative prayer, various forms of inner healing, spiritual direction, and the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius. Along the way, I discovered a truth that continues to shape every part of my life: God's love isn't something we achieve or "maintain" through our efforts. It is a gift we receive, rest in, and allow to transform us—again and again.

That journey is still unfolding. I haven't "arrived," and I don't expect to. But I have found that becoming rooted in God's love changes everything. It softens our striving, quiets our fears, deepens our relationships, and opens us to the gentle work of the Holy Spirit. It is a joy and a privilege to accompany others as they discover that same freedom for themselves.

Today, I serve as a full-time Spiritual Director and Spiritual Direction Supervisor, accompanying individuals and groups through spiritual direction, retreats and workshops, spiritual direction supervision, and the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius. I also co-lead a women's Bible study of about fifty women and partner with my husband, Neil—a licensed marriage and family therapist and spiritual director in training—to lead marriage retreats and intensives that integrate spiritual formation with relational healing.

A Few Things I Love...

Picture
Fresh flowers. I love to have them in my home, which is why I started a flower garden in my backyard. They're a small, daily reminder that beauty nourishes the soul.

Journaling and writing. I've loved both since I was a girl. Whether it's personal reflections, letters, blog posts, or newsletter articles, words have always been one of the ways I listen for God and make sense of what's happening within me and around me.

Music. I began playing the flute in seventh grade, toured Europe with a concert band after high school, and later spent many years playing in worship. Neil, a bass player, helps to keep music woven into our everyday life. We love concert videos, live music, and just about every genre imaginable.

Hiking, gardening, and being outdoors. Nature has always been one of my favorite places to meet with God. There is something deeply grounding about enjoying God's creation, appreciating beauty, and tending living things and watching them grow—a quiet parable for the work of spiritual direction.

Reading. Non-fiction, memoir, poetry, fiction—I usually have more than one book going at once.

People with a heart for ministry. Growing up as a preacher's kid, I lived in furnished parsonages and moved from church to church, which taught me both the beauty and the hidden costs of ministry. It gave me a lasting affection for pastors, ministry leaders, and their families.

The Nashville area. I grew up in West Tennessee and have lived in the Nashville area since my early twenties, back when it was still a big small town and Opryland was the place everyone visited. We've watched it grow in ways we never imagined, and while we sometimes miss the slower pace of earlier days, it remains our beloved home.

Family. Working as a freelance editor allowed me to be present while our two  daughters were growing up—one of the greatest gifts of my life. Neil and I have now been married for forty years, and he still makes me laugh every single day. And finally...

Salty over sweet. Every time.

Perhaps something you've read here has resonated with you in some way. Whether you're longing for a deeper awareness of God's presence, navigating a season of transition, discerning your next step, or simply longing to slow down and listen, I'd be honored to accompany you on your journey.

I look forward to hearing your story!
