Spiritual Direction

“Spiritual direction is, in reality, nothing more than a way of leading us
to see and obey the real Director—the Holy Spirit hidden in the depths of our soul.”

—Thomas Merton

“What is spiritual direction, anyway?”
That's a question I’m asked often. Even though this ancient and respected Christian tradition is having a resurgence of interest these days among Christians of all backgrounds (because, let’s face it, there’s a real need today to slow down and connect more deeply with God), many people are still unfamiliar with it. Let’s start with what spiritual direction is not. It’s not counseling, therapy, or spiritual “advice.” Spiritual direction is not about problem solving but about your relationship with God; it's about prayerful listening and “paying attention” (being attentive) to the ways that God is moving, working, and speaking within you and your life.

Imagine that your relationship with God is a house...
The front yard, porch, and entryway are the external or “doing” aspects of that relationship, such as corporate worship, serving others, studying God's Word, and praying with words (all essential to the life of faith). The interior rooms of the house are the more internal aspects of that relationship, such as solitude, silence, listening, praying without words, and resting in God. If that sounds strange to you, just think about spending time with a dear friend or spouse. Often you can go for long stretches of time just being together without any words at all yet feel a strong connection and intimacy.

These “interior” aspects of our relationship with God are just as essential yet often are neglected, because we live in a culture that places a high value on doing. Just think about it: every area of life encourages us to do more, try harder, and be better. And living that way is exhausting, isn't it? We’ve lost the art of simply being with God and connecting spirit to Spirit. We’re unsure how to listen for God and rest in God’s unconditional and unfailing love. But that is what transforms us, bringing significant spiritual growth! Spiritual direction can help you take your relationship with God to a deeper level as you "move into the interior rooms" and listen for the leadings of the Holy Spirit.

A spiritual director is a spiritual companion...
In spiritual direction, God is the true director. You might think of a spiritual director as a spiritual companion, someone you trust who walks with you on your journey, coming alongside to gently guide you in becoming attentive to what God is doing and how God is calling you to greater healing and wholeness in Jesus Christ. A spiritual director can help you attune your spiritual ears and heart to God. Your sessions together will help you to recognize God's presence and activity in your everyday life so that you can hear God's invitations and say yes to God in new and life-giving ways.

Spiritual direction is unique to you...
Because spiritual direction meets you where you are on your journey, you'll find it to be a very personalized experience. The sessions are a time of listening, conversation, and prayer following the leading of the Holy Spirit. My desire is to create a sacred space where you can...

  • be seen, known, and loved.
  • tell your story
  • seek God’s wisdom and guidance.
  • be still and listen for God’s voice.
  • hear God’s invitations.
  • explore new spiritual practices.
  • connect more deeply with God.
  • learn to rest in God’s love.
  • become more aware of God’s presence and activity in your everyday life.
  • discern God’s will and leading.
  • experience God’s comfort and healing.
  • seek peace in the midst of pain or difficulty.
  • explore doubts, questions, or fears.
  • surrender control.
  • discover your true self.
  • be more present in the moment.
  • care for your soul.
  • pursue healing for your relationships with self, God, and others.
  • learn to abide (in Christ), not strive.

If any of this resonates with you and sounds like it might be helpful on your spiritual journey, I invite you to schedule a free consultation where you can learn more about spiritual direction, ask questions, share your story, and get to know me to see if we might be a good fit. (Before your consultation, please be sure to complete the Questionnaire and Disclosure Statement.) I'm grateful to be on the journey with you!
